SUCCESSFUL SAVE THE MARA 2014 CAMPAIGN!

Thanks to the invaluable support of our donors the goal of raising a committed US$ 140,000 seed funding for the Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association was reached in 2014. From this platform we believe that, when we all work together there is no end to the Mara - only ands.

THE MARA NEEDS MORE

The Maasai Mara is severely threatened and many Mara observers believe that without immediate intervention, the Maasai Mara, as we know it, could be lost within 5 years. Statistical analysis revealed that populations of almost all large wildlife species monitored in the Mara have declined by over 66% over the last 3 decades [Ogutu, J.O., et al. 2011. Journal of Zoology 285(2):99-109]. In response to the impending crisis, Asilia Giving initiated a collaborative fundraising campaign to accelerate the development of the areas neighbouring the Maasai Mara National Reserve. This action was a critical step towards ensuring that the greater Mara region is preserved for existing and future generations.
SEED FUNDING THE MMWCA. GOAL REACHED!

The main purpose of the Save the Mara 2014 campaign was to establish the Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association (MMWCA). The MMWCA, is a regional not-for-profit membership organization that aims to conserve the greater Mara region neighbouring the Reserve, for the benefit of all parties; landowners, tourists and the Kenyan people and the preservation of the world-renowned wildlife and landscape.

SECURING THE MARA REGION

We continue our support to accelerate the success of the existing and in development Mara conservancies. A promising example is the Mara Naboisho Conservancy. The conservancy is made up of land contributions from 500 Maasai landowners. The conservancy fees paid for the lease of land provide the community with a sustainable income while ensuring the conservation of wildlife in a vital part of the region.

TAKE ACTION TO SECURE THE MARA REGION

The Maasai Mara National Reserve and its surrounding Mara conservancies already benefit from your visit to the area through Asilia Africa's tourism operations – thank you for travelling with Asilia. Unfortunately tourism is not enough. For us to Save the Mara, we all need to do a little more: make a donation to the area or support a local project and stay in contact to hear the latest news and stories.
